NIV is Non-Invasive Ventilation. You have NIV to help to keep your chest healthy. It is important that you and anyone supporting you, knows that you use a ventilator.
NIV works by gently blowing air into your lungs to help you take bigger breaths. This means that you can breathe in more oxygen and breathe out more carbon dioxide. NIV should be used every night when you sleep. Sometimes it needs to be used during the day too. The person who gave you your NIV machine will advise you when you should use it.
Using your NIV will help you to sleep better and feel less tired during the day. It can help if you are breathless, and it can help you to stay well.
NIV is not suitable for everyone. If it is right for you, a healthcare professional will have recommended it and shown you how to use it. If you are unsure, please ask your GP or healthcare provider.
