Keeping My Chest Healthy (KMCH) Essentials

The KMCH Essentials training is designed for carers, support workers, family carers and staff who support people with learning disabilities in everyday life. It provides the core knowledge to build confidence, recognise early signs that someone’s chest health may be at risk, understand why small day-to-day actions matter, and know when and how to escalate concerns.

The modules provide the knowledge and evidence behind KMCH, helping learners understand why people with a learning disability are at increased risk of respiratory illness and how proactive, person-centred support can reduce these risks and improve outcomes.

Who is this training is suitable for?

Anyone who provides care, support or advocacy for a person with a learning disability, including family members, friends, paid carers, support workers, personal assistants and frontline staff.

No experience is necessary to complete this training.

How to approach this online CPD training?

Starting at module one, work through each module in turn.

    1. First, watch the short introductory video associated with the module.
    2. Next, read the additional information alongside the video and complete the activities.
    3. Some modules require action . These are learning panels with one of these three headings: Read, Watch or Case study scenario. Here you will need to directly read something prescribed watch something or engage with a case study. We have enabled each case study to open in a new tab so that you can easily toggle between the two pages.
    4. Other modules need you to think about the information you are being presented with. These are learning panels with one of these three headings: Compare, Reflect, or Consider. Here there is additional reading or further suggested activities to carry out. Where these are suggested, they will help to embed learning and broaden understanding in that module.

The modules have been designed to be short interactive learning sessions which can be completed in bitesized chunks, this may be more manageable than completing all of the modules in one go.

It may be helpful to revisit modules from time to time as a reminder.

Each module has an estimated completion time. This should allow for adequate time for learning to be allocated.

Case studies

Case studies are used throughout this training to help show how the Keeping My Chest Healthy approach can be used in everyday practice.

Some case studies also include additional resources, which can be found at the bottom of the page when prompted within the unit.
