Protect your lungs and stay well this winter

World Pneumonia Day – 12 November 2025

Protect your Lungs and stay well this winter

This World Pneumonia Day, the Keeping My Chest Healthy team is encouraging everyone to check their vaccine status and make sure all those eligible are protected.

Pneumonia and chest infections remain one of the leading causes of preventable death for people with learning disabilities. A simple vaccine check, and one booked jab can help prevent serious illness and hospital stays this winter.

Ask your doctor or nurse to check whether you’ve had your pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccine.

Getting vaccinated helps keep your chest healthy and reduces the risk of becoming seriously ill.

Who Should Have the Pneumococcal (Pneumonia) Vaccine?

You should have the pneumococcal vaccine if you are:

  • > Aged 65 or over
You’ll be offered one dose, usually when you turn 65.
  • > A baby
Babies are offered two doses — the first at 16 weeks, and a booster at 1 year old.
  • > A child or adult at higher risk of getting seriously ill

Some people with certain long-term health conditions need at least one dose (and some may need extra or regular doses). You’re at higher risk if you have:

  • Chronic respiratory, heart, kidney or liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • A weakened immune system (because of illness or treatment)
  • Problems with your spleen, or if it has been removed
  • Other specific medical conditions – see the NHS guidance for the full list

If you’re unsure whether you or the person you care for is eligible, contact your GP or practice nurse. They can check your records and advise you.
